This Friday, consider checking out The Body is Not an Apology. Founder Sonya Renee Taylor, an established and renowned poet and activist runs the organization with the help of many volunteers and interns. The group works to end all forms of fatphobia, body terrorism, racism, various forms of shaming (slut shaming, fat shaming, body shaming, etc) and generally make the world a better and safer place. Check out their Facebook page, Tumblr page, and/or website for more details and information.
Another sweet find: I Have a Therapist is a project that seeks to normalize therapy and seeking mental health services. It empowers people who struggle with mental illness as well as those who simply want to keep things in check by seeing a therapist, and it does this through visibility. As one friend of mine on Facebook pointed it, it is lacking in it’s representation of people of color (I think I counted three, four if you count the sisters separately). Despite this, the effort is one that gives me hope. Follow, and consider submitting to ihaveatherapist.com, especially if you’re from an underrepresented community (i.e. queer, trans, of color, varying abilities and body types, etc). Let’s have our voices and identities seen and heard!
WARNING/DISCLOSURE: NSFW (CONTAINS NUDITY AND EXPLICIT SEXUALITY, PROCEED ACCORDINGLY)
Last, but not at all least, I would like to suggest a website/project that is focused on moving out of the traditional misogynist and hetero/etc.normative ways of pornography and erotica, and into a more empowering, artistic, individualistic, and overall ethical form of erotic art and nude photography. I Shot Myself, ISM, is a website where individual cis-women (they plan to include men and transfolks in the future) photograph and submit nude and erotic photos of themselves to this site for people to view and purchase. The proceeds go to an anti-sex-trafficking organization. I could go on and on about this project, but I’ll let the site speak for itself. Check it out. They also have a twitter.
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed this week’s recommendations, and HAPPY FRIDAY!
