Follow Friday: Three Podcasts to Check Out

By: Sam White

Admittedly, I watch a lot of movies, television series, and follow all the latest pop culture events. Thanks to social media, I can follow a play by play of a show, read about the consensus on the latest movie, or read a celebrity’s offensive tweet. However, as I absorb this media, I am always observant as to how race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, and age intersect. As someone who consumes media with a critical lens, it is refreshing to find podcasts with a similar focus. One of my favorite things to do is come home, cook dinner, and listen to pop culture podcasts. Currently, my top three are:

1. Two Brown Girls

2. Black Girls Talking

3. Cinema in Noir

All three podcasts are hosted by women of color. From discussions on mainstream pop culture successes such as Scandal to newly released independent cinema, these podcasts highlight media, especially from people of color, in a way that is witty, relevant, and original. Whether you are looking to find a new series to start or need to listen to a sharp critique on a recent film, these podcasts are a great way to stay informed and entertained in the world of pop culture.
